Elephant tree – Porticularia afra

The porticularia is a semi-succulent, it retains high water content within its plump leaves. It is the bonsai equivalent of a Camel. Therefore it can (depending on environment) cope with only being watering around 2-3 times a week. It is ideally suited for growing in offices. We sell the majority of these trees to people that want a bonsai on their desk at work. You can water it on  Friday and it’ll be fine all weekend till Monday morning.

They don’t like to get cold, and leafs can wilt if this happens. Really needs keeping above 15 deg C.

Re-pot it every 2 years or so into our basic bonsai compost mix and it will thrive. We feed every 2-3 weeks during the growing season with Phosmag granular fertiliser.
