Greenwood History

Established in 1978 by the renowned bonsai artist and author Harry Tomlinson we have since built an enviable reputation worldwide. 2008 saw a new era begin at Greenwood Bonsai.

Since Harry’s retirement in 2008 the business is now owned and run by his two sons, Corin and Paul, who are now building on 30 years of success and taking the nursery into a new era. Set in 12 acres of beautiful countryside, just one mile north of Nottingham, you will find  the largest specialised Bonsai nursery in the UK, who can offer you unparalleled choice and knowledge on bonsai.

Having both been brought up on a bonsai nursery both Corin and Paul are easily qualified to answer all you questions and are only to pleased to help. Both Corin and Paul have always been active in the business and even as children they could constantly be found helping their father on the nursery.

Greenwood Bonsai Studio

Corin studied and obtained a National Diploma in horticulture, and then spent several years studying Bonsai in America. During a 4 year apprenticeship he studied primarily with William N. Valavanis owner of The International Bonsai Arboretum in Rochester New York. During his time in America Corin was also fortunate to study under Chase Rosade and Yuji Yoshimura, both renowned International Bonsai Artists.

Although Paul has not travelled as widely and studied under the variety of bonsai masters as Corin, he has spent the last 15 years working for and learning from his father, were he has gained a vast knowledge on styling, pot selection, care and maintenance and potential problems that you may run into with your bonsai.

As part of our approach to bonsai, we not only sell everything that you will need but we also run regular classes to introduce new customers to bonsai. Our beginner’s class is ideal if you are thinking about taking up bonsai as a hobby, it is based around a one day workshop here in our studio, were Corin will demonstrate how to turn an ordinary garden shrub into a bonsai. After demonstrating the basic principles it is over to you, you will be given a plant to work on and with a bit of advice and guidance from Corin will start creating your own bonsai. The course covers all the basic principles, from Trimming, Needle pinching, Wiring, Root pruning and of course potting up your tree. When you are finished you are free to take your tree home with you and start enjoying a fascinating hobby.

For those at a more advanced level we regularly run courses throughout the year on a variety of subjects using larger field grown material such as, Forest plantings, Cedars, Oaks, Multiple trunk Maple Grafts and Yews.

We also offer one to one tuition, bring along you tree and Corin will help you style it or if you prefer, you can do what many of our customers do, leave the tree with Corin to re style for you, have a look at some of the trees Corin has styled of how we can transform your tree into a stunning Bonsai, in our case studies section.
