Corin Tomlinson Biography

In my quest to learn bonsai I have been lucky enough to study and apprentice with some of the most respected bonsai artists in the world.

I consider bonsai to be made up of two parts, horticultural and artistic, and feel that one must have sufficient knowledge in both of these areas to achieve best results with Bonsai.

To achieve this goal, I first undertook a 3 year National Diploma in Horticulture at Merrist Wood College in Surrey, UK. This I complemented by extensive full time study mainly in the USA.

I spent time studying with Chase Rosade at his bonsai studio in New Hope, Pennsylvannia, and was very lucky to be given many one to one workshops by YujiYoshimura, the founder of Bonsai in the USA.

I have demonstrated widely at conventions and symposia throughout the USA and upon my return to England became curator of The National Bonsai Collection housed at The Royal Botanical Gardens in Birmingham.

Since this time I have worked and studied full time with my father, Harry Tomlinson at Greenwood Bonsai Studio in Nottingham, England.

Having studied bonsai for over 20 years, under some of the worlds best respected bonsai masters, such as Wm N Valavanis, from the International Bonsai Arboretum in Rochester New York, Chase Rosade, from Pennsylvannia,Yuji Yoshimuraand of course my father, Harry Tomlinson now spend a great deal of my time travelling around the country, demonstrating the skills and artistry that I have learnt.

I am willing as always to travel throughout the UK and further field for demonstrations, lectures, and workshops for groups or on a one to one basis.

Although I am flexible regarding bonsai topics, here are some of my most requested subjects –

Introduction to Bonsai (including styling from nursery stock) especially useful if your club / society now has many new members who would benefit from this foundation demonstration.

Group / Forest Planting– A popular favourite with one or two different groups explained and created during the meeting.

Satsuki Azalea– Demonstration usually on a large field grown specimen, and information on care and maintenance of this beautiful species, includes short slide show of these trees in flower (so can be done at most times of the year).

Design and Styling –With discussion and work on members trees, project material, the more trees the merrier!!!

Tray Landscapes– Creation of one or usually 2 tray landscape /saikei plantings. Using rocks, trees, mosses, ferns, to create a beautiful scene in miniature.

Flowering Trees– Lecture and demonstrations on a selection of flowering and fruiting trees that will spice up any bonsai collection with colour and seasonal interest.

Raft Planting – Demonstration on this unusual and not often seen technique. A forest planting from a single tree!

Wiring – An often-overlooked procedure. I will demonstrate basic to advanced wiring techniques, so that you can get the best from any tree you are working on. Benefits of different wire, when to use what wire, why, and how, styling of selected material. Always useful for beginners to advanced.

I also do many styling demonstrations (usually from raw stock) on a particular species or type of tree, including but not limited to

Workshops – Available for groups, or for one to one tuition. Many further a field clubs will choose to have a workshop either in the afternoon before the meeting or the morning after. To help with specific trees their members have. Minimum for groups is 6, maximum 10 students. One to one tuition varies depending on location and duration.

Last minute service– If you have been let down by another speaker or decide at short notice to have a visiting artist at your next meeting let me know, I may be available. I can even do same day if possible (if you let me know before 12 noon I can be at your meeting that evening if its within a 4 hour drive). Many times I can even do the same subject your members are expecting!

I also provide a compact yet extensive sales table of bonsai tools, pots, books etc. Please feel free to contact me with any queries or bookings.
